SEA-H2X Submarine Cable Enters Commercial Service Across Asia

China Mobile International says the new route adds more than 200 Tbps of design capacity across a key Asia-Pacific corridor.

The 5,746-kilometre system links Hong Kong and Hainan with the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore.

The Southeast Asia–Hainan–Hong Kong submarine cable, known as SEA-H2X, has entered commercial service after completing system acceptance tests, China Mobile International announced on July 22.

The 5,746-kilometre system connects Hainan and Hong Kong with the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore. It has eight fibre pairs on its trunk route and a design capacity of more than 200 terabits per second.

New capacity across regional hubs

SEA-H2X uses an open cable architecture with spectrum-sharing capability, according to the company. The design is intended to give participating operators more flexibility in how they allocate capacity while supporting high-volume data traffic between major regional markets.

China Mobile is the project’s largest investor. The company said it has invested in four trunk fibre pairs between Hong Kong and Singapore, along with branch segments serving Hainan, the Philippines and Thailand, giving it more than 100 Tbps of dedicated bandwidth.

China Mobile will also operate the cable’s network operations centre, responsible for monitoring, fault diagnosis and performance optimisation.

Built for a denser digital economy

The company plans to connect SEA-H2X with existing Asia-Pacific systems including APG, SJC and SJC2, as well as routes extending towards the Middle East and Europe. That broader network is intended to add route diversity and support data-centre and cloud traffic across the region.

The commercial launch arrives as AI workloads, streaming, digital commerce and cross-border cloud services put more pressure on Asia’s underlying network infrastructure. Submarine cables carry the large majority of intercontinental internet traffic, making new routes and redundancy important to both capacity and resilience.
